Lewis did. He wrote an essay in 1949 exposing the tyrannical folly of “The Humanitarian Theory of Punishment” ( Essay Collection and Other Short Pieces, London: HarperCollins, 2000, 698-705). This theory reigns in Norway today.

C. S. Lewis may seem like an odd subject for study when it comes to the theology and practice of worship. He was neither a clergyman nor a professional theologian. And though he wrote wisely and winsomely on a wide range of subjects related to the Christian life, he devoted relatively little attention to ecclesiology, liturgy, music, and corporate worship.

Lewis brings this point home with a simple metaphor: “you cannot judge any artefact (sic) except by using it as it was intended. It is no good judging a butter-knife by seeing whether it will saw logs” (in Essay Collection and Other Short Pieces 90). This style of writing is vintage Lewis.
